Formaldehyde is the simplest aldehyde molecule with active chemical properties and certain toxicity. At room temperature, it is a colorless gas with a pungent odor, which easily undergoes polymerization to form polyformaldehyde. Formaldehyde is easily soluble in water, alcohol and other organic solvents.
